Stroke Rehabilitation Mug
After a stroke, difficulty with hand control and swallowing is common, this series of mugs are designed to facilitate progression in the rehabilitation process. The ideal outcome of this series is to rehabilitate the control of the hand movements and swallowing to the user is able to use a regular mug again. This particular set is for individuals that have their left hand side effected but there will be an option for each hands in future.
The aesthetic of these mugs is a key part of the design as current cups available on the market of a stroke patients are very demoralising and resemble that of a toddler’s sipping cup. The intention was to have a mug that looks like a regular mug, but with subtle qualities to aid the progressive rehabilitation process. I would like the user to hold a sense of pride when using these mugs and to feel comfortable using them on the day to day basis rather than sitting in the cupboard.
As not all stroke cases are the same, so there is variance on the level of hand control (with the complexity of the handles on the mug), as well as facilitated swallowing through the different sized mouth piece. This is where the combination of cup and lid is effective to suit the user’s level of rehabilitation.
